REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSE (RPNs)

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) help physicians and registered nurses (RNs) care for patients. They have the technical knowledge to perform nursing duties. They work within a well-defined area of their specialization to provide high-quality care to patients and their families. RPNs develop and improve practical and theoretical knowledge, competence and skills throughout the role and maintain all evidence required.
Qualifications Required:
• Current certificate of competence as Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses
• Good understanding of the College of Nurses standard of care.
• Current basic cardiac life support certification (BCLS).
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops understanding of all elements of the nursing process and be able to assist the registered nurse in the on-going assessment, planning, management, and evaluation of care

• Provides quality care to patients, regardless of the complexity of their disease or the diagnosis

• Provides care for all patients, including those who need awareness rather than physical assistance; helps colleagues on request

• Supports individuals with all aspects of care including daily living, providing person-centered care, and promoting health and independence through awareness raising and care navigation to other professionals as appropriate

• Performs and record clinical observations including blood pressure, temperature, respirations, pulse

• Obeys the Nursing code of ethics • Shows sensitivity to patients and can detect the slightest changes in their psychological state

• Provides assistance to people with different cultural, social, emotional and spiritual needs

• Assists physicians and collaborates with other nurses • Ensures the privacy, dignity and safety of individuals is always maintained

• Demonstrates the ability to recognize changing priorities seeking advice and guidance from the Registered Nurse or other registered care professionals as appropriate

• Reports back and share information with the registered nurses on the condition, behavior, activity, and responses of individuals

• Assist in the delivery of complex care as prescribed by the registered nurse and or physician
